A 170-room hotel with a view down the finishing straight will be built at Sydney’s oldest racetrack.
NSW Racing Minister George Souris and the Australian Turf Club (ATC) on Thursday unveiled plans for the four-star complex which will be built trackside at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Mr Souris said the project was unique.
“It may well become the pre-eminent example around the world of this new, exciting concept of a hotel literally being part of a racecourse,” Mr Souris he said on Thursday at Randwick.
Neither Mr Souris nor the ATC could confirm the pricetag for the enormous project, which is scheduled for completion in late 2014.
The five-floor complex will feature terraces, lawns, bars and restaurants to be managed by the ATC on racedays.
“This is perhaps the first hotel in the world to actually be built on a racecourse,” ATC chairman John Cornish said.
“You only have to look out that window and down the famous Randwick straight to see just what a great view it will be.”
The massive undertaking follows the start of a $150 million upgrade to Randwick’s grandstand and stable facilities last November.
